this was the 3rd chocolate cake we made in as many days.

5th birthday party in the park

Beach at Santa Monica

September was a very hot month here with the average temperature around 84 Fahrenheit most days. One late afternoon we took Grandma down to the beach to catch the cool ocean breeze.

Birthday Tea

Grandma managed to cut the cake into a dinosaur shape. She also iced it and gave it chocolate button spikes.

Scarlett's birthday and helping with the cake making

On her actual birthday I thought it would be nice to make a chocolate cake and thought I'd quickly whip one up. However, the little ones got wind of this plan and had to help. It took some time and much licking of the cake bowl. They also like to smear mixture all over their faces. But the result was the lightest chocolate cake I have ever made.

Weekend escape to Ojai

cycling around Lake Casitas

Sunday Farmer's market in Ojai
The outside of the Inn

We stayed at the lovely and extremely quiet Su Nido Inn.

Scarlett does not like Soccer much

She is a very sullen participant. And last week did not want to play at all. She is number 2.

First day of Kindergarten

Scarlett started school just after Labor Day. There are 5 kindergarten classes and about 20 children in each class. In Scarlett's there are more girls than boys and she is already making friends. Every morning they all line up in a row ready to go in when the bell goes. That is her classroom in the background. Luckily she loves school and she only cried a little bit on day 1 and day 2. Although kindergarten is only in the morning, I have signed her up to an afterschool program so she can carry on having fun at school. Sophie and I can have a mellow afternoon without much drama.

visit from Grandma and Grumps

When we came back from our trip to the desert, we picked up Grandma and Grumps from LAX. These photos were taken in Malibu when we went for mini hike in Solitude Canyon. Its about a 20 minute drive from Santa Monica up along the PCH. It was a pretty stunning day, even for SoCal.
