stopping for gas
A trip to the California Central Coast
is not complete with a stop in Big Sur. Unfortunately for us Big Sur was shrouded in fog for the entire day that we were there. So we did the spectacular coastal drive south but saw nothing. These pictures show the best it got so we decided not to stay the night in Big Sur but to scamper inland a bit for sunshine and cell phone reception at the Marriot in San Luiz Obispo.
The Dream Inn
Very early morning fog
We stayed here in Santa Cruz and it was very lovely. This is the view from our hotel balcony and the pool was very nice especially as the ocean up there is rather cold. I couldn't go in - my feet got numb in the shallow waves and it didn't seem like fun really.
We didn't have babysitters, but Robb got very good at making margaritas using the hotel room's ice bucket as a cocktail shaker.

Big Basin Redwoods
This was a chimney redwood - named because you can look right up through the middle and see the sky above. Apparently lots of forest fires made it that way.
Its hard to tell here, but Sophie is standing in a dust bowl in this chimney tree. She thought it was the greatest thing and stamped her feet in the dust, picked it up with both hands and wiped it all over her head and face. We started our walk at 5pm so it was getting a little bit dark.
We made a short trip up highway 9 to coastal redwoods north of Boulder Creek. The forest was very quiet (until we arrived) and we even heard a woodpecker. In the old days we would have heard and seen more wildlife but the little Kleins are very loud and scared anything and everything away. The brochure said that the forest was very quiet and peaceful - so we had to believe it was true.

Beach at Santa Cruz
Daddy built a sand sports car for his little girls
We stayed in the Dream Inn and it was fab. The room was nicely decorated with a kind of retro look and our room had a balcony that backed on to the ocean. The sea lions living underneath the pier barked all night but mostly they were drowned out by the sound of waves crashing on the shore. The hotel itself had a lovely good sized pool and Scarlett and Sophie loved having their pancakes and berries poolside.

Day three of the Road Trip - Labor Day
The Strawberry Queen
We left the Adelaide Inn and drove north and west through Carmel Valley Village. We stopped for lunch at an organic farm (Earthbound Farm). It had a sweet children's garden and an amazing maze made of maize aka sweetcorn.
Its worth mentioning that the night before we'd had dinner at Big Bubba's Bad BBQ. Everyone chewed on big bad juicy ribs and Scarlett rode the bull.
