Big Basin Redwoods

This was a chimney redwood - named because you can look right up through the middle and see the sky above. Apparently lots of forest fires made it that way.

Its hard to tell here, but Sophie is standing in a dust bowl in this chimney tree. She thought it was the greatest thing and stamped her feet in the dust, picked it up with both hands and wiped it all over her head and face. We started our walk at 5pm so it was getting a little bit dark.

We made a short trip up highway 9 to coastal redwoods north of Boulder Creek. The forest was very quiet (until we arrived) and we even heard a woodpecker. In the old days we would have heard and seen more wildlife but the little Kleins are very loud and scared anything and everything away. The brochure said that the forest was very quiet and peaceful - so we had to believe it was true.
